Cheeseboard 101

Since we started the Deli, the one question we get asked the most is about how to build a cheeseboard and amounts needed.  As with everything food related, there isn’t a hard and fast rule and choices should always be dictated by your palette and not someone else’s opinion!

As a guide we always recommend between 100 and 150g of cheese per person if it is the main event.  This should allow you plenty for the meal and some leftovers to snack on for the next few days. If you’re serving cheese alongside other food (say, as part of a buffet) then somewhere around 80 grams should suffice. If you want cheese to go at the end of a meal, something in the region of 30-50g per person should suffice.

As for the types of cheese, we will always guide you around the number of people you are buying for.  If you are buying for 2-4 people, then you may be best buying three different cheeses, however if you are catering for more then you may wish to spread it across five different cheeses.  Broadly, these will break down into; hard cheese, soft cheese, goat cheese (or sheep), flavoured cheese and blue cheese. Again, you can combine these and select, for example, a soft blue or a goat’s blue cheese.

What you choose to accompany your cheeseboard with is, again, entirely up to you.  Some cheeses pair really well with a simple slice of apple (cheddar), honey (goat’s cheese) or walnut (gorgonzola dolce), or you can opt for things like crackers, chutney or cured meats!  Ultimately the limiting factors are your imagination!
